The FIA have confirmed that Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli received an additional punishment following the Hungarian Grand Prix, adding to the three-place grid penalty he had already been handed before Sunday’s race.
Antonelli entered the Budapest weekend under pressure as the title battle continued to intensify. After qualifying, the Mercedes driver was penalized by the stewards for an incident that resulted in a three-place grid drop, a decision that also affected seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. While both drivers accepted their starting position changes, the FIA later confirmed that Antonelli’s sanctions did not end there.
Following a review of post-session procedures, Formula 1’s governing body imposed a second penalty on the young Italian, reaffirming that all competitors are expected to comply with the sport’s strict regulations. Although the additional punishment was less significant than the grid drop, the FIA made it clear that the stewards’ decision was fully supported under the International Sporting Code and Formula 1’s sporting regulations.
The latest ruling sparked fresh discussion throughout the paddock, with several observers describing the outcome as a “painful” reminder of how unforgiving Formula 1’s rulebook can be. The Hungarian Grand Prix weekend also produced controversy for Lewis Hamilton, who found himself on the receiving end of another FIA penalty during the race. The Ferrari driver was handed a five-second time penalty after exceeding the pit-lane speed limit by just 0.1 km/h. While the margin appeared incredibly small, the FIA’s automated timing system confirmed the breach, leaving the stewards with little room for discretion.
Former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle admitted the punishment would have felt harsh from Hamilton’s perspective. However, he acknowledged that the regulations are applied consistently to every driver, regardless of the size of the infringement or the driver’s reputation.
The series of penalties has once again highlighted the FIA’s commitment to enforcing the rules without exception.
