The FIA has handed down a series of penalties and rulings following a dramatic Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with several drivers finding themselves on the wrong side of the stewards during a chaotic weekend.
The biggest sanctions came before the race, when multiple drivers were forced to take grid penalties because of power-unit changes. Kimi Antonelli was hit with a 30-place grid penalty, Alexander Albon received a 20-place penalty, while Liam Lawson was handed a 35-place penalty after additional power-unit elements were used beyond the permitted allocation.
Antonelli’s penalty appeared to destroy his hopes of a strong result at his home race. Instead, the Mercedes teenager produced one of the most remarkable drives of the season.
Starting from 19th, Antonelli carved his way through the field and eventually secured a sensational victory at Monza. The FIA confirmed that he finished ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Max Verstappen, completing an extraordinary comeback in front of the Italian crowd.
Oscar Piastri was another major casualty of the stewards’ decisions. The McLaren driver qualified third but was given a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during Q2. The sanction dropped Piastri to sixth on the official starting grid.
The penalties did not stop after qualifying.
Sergio Perez was handed a five-second time penalty during the race for failing to follow the Race Director’s instructions after going off the circuit at Turns 1 and 2. Earlier on Sunday, the Cadillac driver had also received a reprimand for failing to follow the prescribed pit-exit procedure.
Liam Lawson, meanwhile, avoided a further punishment after his battle with Nico Hulkenberg at Turn 4 was investigated. The stewards determined that no additional action was necessary because Lawson had already been shown the black-and-white flag.
George Russell was also investigated for an alleged failure to slow for yellow flags, but the FIA’s decision did not result in a further penalty. The official FIA document list confirms that the investigation was among the post-race matters reviewed by the stewards.
The FIA’s decision documents show just how busy the stewards were throughout the Italian Grand Prix, with investigations covering starting procedures, pit-exit instructions, yellow flags, racing incidents and technical matters.
But amid all the controversy, Antonelli delivered the headline moment. A driver who started near the back because of a major grid penalty ended the afternoon standing on the top step of the Monza podium.
For Mercedes, it was a spectacular one-two. For Antonelli, it was a home victory that transformed a weekend which initially looked destined to be dominated by penalties into one of the biggest moments of his young Formula 1 career.
The FIA penalties may have changed the starting order at Monza — but they could not stop Antonelli from writing his name into Italian Grand Prix history.
