The FIA has overturned the decision that restored Pierre Gasly to third place at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, meaning the Alpine driver has once again lost his podium finish.
The International Court of Appeal announced its verdict on Friday, September 4, following an appeal from Red Bull and McLaren against the earlier decision by the Monaco Grand Prix stewards.
Gasly originally crossed the finish line in fourth position, but was promoted to third after George Russell received a late penalty. However, the Frenchman was subsequently handed two five-second penalties for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit, with recorded speeds of 60.1 km/h and 60.4 km/h. Those penalties initially dropped Gasly to seventh.
Alpine then successfully requested a Right of Review, presenting evidence that a problem with the Monaco pit-lane timing information had affected the measurements used to determine Gasly’s speed. On June 12, the stewards accepted the review and rescinded both penalties, restoring Gasly to third place.
That decision dramatically changed the final Monaco classification, with Isack Hadjar losing his podium position and Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bulls drivers also being moved down the order. Red Bull and McLaren subsequently appealed the stewards’ decision, arguing that the ruling had created concerns over the sporting consequences of the review process.
The FIA International Court of Appeal heard the case in Paris on August 25 before delivering its decision on September 4.
The court ruled in favour of Red Bull and McLaren, declaring their appeals admissible and setting aside the June 12 decisions. It also confirmed that Gasly’s original two five-second penalties stand and ordered the relevant sporting authorities to amend the race classification and championship points accordingly.
As a result, Isack Hadjar is officially back in third place, while Oscar Piastri returns to fourth. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad move back into fifth and sixth respectively, with Gasly classified seventh.
The ruling brings an end to one of the most complicated post-race disputes of the 2026 F1 season. It also leaves the FIA facing renewed attention over the reliability of timing systems and the procedures surrounding post-race reviews and appeals.
For Gasly and Alpine, the decision represents another major blow after the team had initially succeeded in overturning the penalties. For Hadjar, however, the ruling restores his Monaco podium and puts his original third-place finish back into the official record.
