Williams F1 team announce Alex Albon driver replacement for Italian Grand Prix

Williams have confirmed that their reserve driver Luke Browning will take Alex Albon’s place during the opening practice session of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, giving the young British driver another opportunity to gain valuable Formula 1 experience.

The announcement means Albon will sit out FP1 at the historic Italian circuit, while Browning will climb into the Williams FW48 for the session. The change is part of Williams’ plans to meet Formula 1’s requirements for rookie running during the season rather than a permanent change to the team’s race lineup.

Browning has already had experience behind the wheel of the current Williams machinery this season. His first opportunity came at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he replaced Carlos Sainz during the opening practice session. His upcoming appearance at Monza will therefore represent another important step in his development as a potential future Formula 1 driver.

The Williams junior was also scheduled to drive during practice in Barcelona, although an electrical problem prevented him from properly completing the session. As a result, that appearance could not be counted toward Williams’ required rookie running, making his Monza outing particularly important for the team.

Formula 1 teams are required to provide opportunities for inexperienced drivers during selected first practice sessions throughout the season. The rule is designed to give young drivers experience in modern F1 cars while allowing teams to evaluate potential future talent.

For Browning, the Monza opportunity provides another chance to demonstrate his ability at one of Formula 1’s most famous circuits. The Italian Grand Prix venue presents a unique challenge because of its long straights, heavy braking zones and high-speed corners. Time in the FW48 should therefore provide the Williams Academy driver with useful experience that could benefit his development.

Browning is currently combining his Williams reserve responsibilities with competition in Japan’s Super Formula championship. His growing experience across different categories has helped establish him as one of the drivers within Williams’ development programme who could potentially be considered for a future Formula 1 opportunity.

The decision does not mean that Albon has lost his Williams race seat. Albon remains one of the team’s two full-time drivers, and the planned absence applies specifically to the opening practice session at Monza. He is expected to return to the car for the remaining sessions and the Grand Prix itself.

The announcement also comes shortly after Williams confirmed Albon’s continued commitment to the team for the 2027 season. Albon has been an important part of Williams’ rebuilding project since joining the outfit in 2022, and the team recently confirmed that their partnership will continue.

With the Italian Grand Prix approaching, attention will therefore turn to Browning’s performance in FP1 and how quickly he can adapt to the demands of Monza. The session will provide Williams with valuable data while giving its young driver another opportunity to show what he can do in a current-generation Formula 1 car.

For Albon, meanwhile, the temporary switch is simply part of Williams’ rookie-development programme. The Thai-British driver will remain central to the team’s competitive plans, while Browning gets another important chance to prove himself on the Formula 1 stage.
