Former Formula 1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen has revealed that a controversial incident involving Lewis Hamilton played a major role in his decision to step away from his position as an FIA steward.

Frentzen, who competed in Formula 1 during the 1990s and early 2000s, revisited the incident while reacting to the FIA’s recent condemnation of online abuse directed at race officials following the Dutch Grand Prix.

The incident occurred at the 2010 European Grand Prix in Valencia, when Hamilton was handed a drive-through penalty after overtaking the safety car following Mark Webber’s major crash. The decision attracted significant criticism, particularly from Spanish fans, who believed Hamilton had escaped with too lenient a punishment.

Television cameras had unusually focused on Frentzen while he was inside the stewards’ office. That led many viewers to believe that he had personally made the decision to punish Hamilton. However, Frentzen stressed that the ruling was not his individual decision and that the stewards worked collectively with race direction.

The backlash became so intense that it even followed Frentzen home. He recalled visiting his mother after the race and being confronted over the Hamilton decision, with her questioning why he had not given the Mercedes driver a harsher punishment.

According to Frentzen, the experience contributed to his decision to leave the stewarding role. He also said the controversy helped influence a change in how Formula 1 presented stewards on television, with officials no longer being individually highlighted in the same way during races.

His recollection has resurfaced at a time when the FIA is again facing concerns over abuse directed at its officials. The governing body recently condemned online attacks against stewards following penalties issued at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Frentzen’s story highlights the pressure placed on FIA officials, who can face intense criticism despite decisions being made collectively under the governing body’s regulations.
