FIA Announce Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen Penalty at Dutch Grand Prix

The FIA has delivered its verdict on an investigation involving Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen during the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix weekend, with both Formula 1 stars avoiding penalties despite being found to have breached a specific sporting regulation.

The incident occurred before the start of Saturday’s Sprint at Zandvoort. Hamilton, Verstappen and several other drivers were investigated after they stopped their cars before reaching Safety Car Line 1 while making their way toward the starting grid. According to the FIA, the action did not comply with instructions contained in the Race Director’s Event Notes.

The regulation involved was Article 12.2.1.i of the FIA International Sporting Code, which covers non-compliance with instructions issued by the Race Director. The investigation therefore had the potential to result in sporting consequences for the drivers involved.

However, after examining the circumstances, the stewards decided not to impose a penalty on Hamilton or Verstappen. The decision also applied to Yuki Tsunoda, Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas, who were investigated over the same issue.

In Hamilton’s case, the stewards noted that his Ferrari stopped before Safety Car Line 1 and consequently did not reach the grid under its own power. This detail was considered when the officials reviewed the circumstances surrounding the infringement.

The decision means that neither Hamilton nor Verstappen lost positions or championship points as a result of the incident. Both drivers were therefore able to continue their Dutch Grand Prix weekend without an additional sporting punishment.

The ruling came during a busy day at Zandvoort. Verstappen finished sixth in the Sprint, while Hamilton crossed the line in seventh. George Russell won the Sprint from pole position, with Charles Leclerc finishing second and Lando Norris taking third.

The result also adds another layer of intrigue to a weekend that has already produced plenty of attention. Verstappen is competing at his home circuit, while Hamilton remains heavily involved in the championship battle. Hamilton entered the weekend behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli in the standings, making every point increasingly important.

Qualifying for Sunday’s main event later produced another twist. Norris claimed pole position, while Russell qualified second and Antonelli took third. Hamilton secured fifth place, with Verstappen set to start seventh after struggling with the balance of his Red Bull.

Although the FIA investigation initially created uncertainty for Hamilton and Verstappen, the final decision allowed both drivers to keep their Sprint results. With no penalty imposed, attention now turns to the main Dutch Grand Prix and whether either driver can recover ground in the championship.

The stewards’ ruling provides clarity on the incident while ensuring that the weekend’s competitive results remain unchanged. With the title fight continuing to tighten, Hamilton and Verstappen will now focus on extracting the maximum possible result from Sunday’s race at Zandvoort.
