Mercedes forced to activate ‘plan B’ as Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari threaten title hopes

Mercedes have been forced to reconsider their development strategy for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season as Ferrari’s resurgence, led in part by Lewis Hamilton, begins to put pressure on the championship leaders. The Silver Arrows had appeared to establish a strong advantage earlier in the campaign, but recent results have narrowed the gap and prompted the team to change its original plans.

Mercedes currently lead both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. After 11 rounds, Kimi Antonelli holds the advantage in the drivers’ standings, while Mercedes have a 72-point cushion over Ferrari in the constructors’ battle. Although those margins remain significant, Ferrari’s recent improvement has made the title fight considerably more competitive.

According to reports from the Italian press, Mercedes had initially intended to stop developing its W17 after the first half of the season. The original idea was to concentrate more resources on the development of the team’s 2027 car, particularly because Mercedes believed its early-season advantage gave it enough breathing room in both championships.

However, Ferrari’s progress has changed the situation. The Italian team has become increasingly competitive and has managed to outperform Mercedes in several recent races. Ferrari’s victories in Barcelona and at the British Grand Prix demonstrated that the gap at the front could be reduced through effective development.

Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari has also added another dimension to the championship battle. The seven-time world champion is chasing a record eighth title and has shown signs of becoming a more serious contender as Ferrari’s performance improves. Sitting 50 points behind Antonelli after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton remains within striking distance with a large portion of the season still ahead.

Ferrari’s development programme appears to be playing a major role in its improved competitiveness. Charles Leclerc has called on the team to remain aggressive with upgrades, arguing that development gains are particularly important under the current regulations. Ferrari’s ability to produce meaningful improvements has helped bring the team closer to Mercedes and has increased pressure on the championship leaders.

For Mercedes, activating a so-called “Plan B” means continuing development of its current car rather than completely switching attention to 2027. The decision reflects the team’s desire to protect its championship advantage and prevent Ferrari from gaining further momentum during the second half of the campaign.

The situation could therefore produce a fascinating battle between Mercedes’ established advantage and Ferrari’s growing momentum. With Hamilton pursuing another championship and Ferrari continuing to push for upgrades, Mercedes can no longer assume that its early-season dominance will be enough.

The remaining races are now likely to determine whether Mercedes can preserve its lead or whether Ferrari and Hamilton can turn their recent progress into a genuine title challenge. The second half of the 2026 season could consequently become much more competitive than Mercedes originally anticipated.
