Red Bull sealed Max Verstappen’s F1 future and it only took them 20 minutes
Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 has once again become a major talking point, with uncertainty surrounding where the four-time world champion could race in the years ahead. However, there was a time when Red Bull Racing needed remarkably little time to convince Verstappen that his future belonged with the team.
According to Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, an important conversation involving Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko played a significant role in securing Max’s commitment to the team. What makes the story particularly interesting is how quickly the discussion reached its conclusion. The conversation reportedly lasted only around 20 minutes before the foundations of a long-term relationship were established.
Marko has long been one of the most influential figures in Verstappen’s career. His involvement began when Max was still a young prospect making his way through the junior ranks. Red Bull recognised his exceptional ability early and moved quickly to bring him into its driver programme.
The relationship eventually developed into one of the most successful partnerships in modern Formula 1. Verstappen made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso before being promoted to Red Bull Racing during the 2016 season. He immediately demonstrated his potential by winning his first race for the senior team in Spain.
From there, Verstappen established himself as the central figure of Red Bull’s F1 operation. He went on to win multiple world championships and became one of the dominant drivers of his generation.
The revelation about the 20-minute conversation is especially significant because of how much trust has developed between Verstappen and Red Bull over the years. Rather than requiring lengthy negotiations to establish their relationship, Marko and the Verstappen camp were apparently able to recognise very quickly that the partnership could become something special.
The current situation, however, is considerably more complicated. Verstappen’s long-term future has generated speculation as rivals continue to monitor his availability. Red Bull’s competitiveness under the latest generation of regulations has also become an important part of the conversation surrounding the Dutchman’s plans. The team has faced a difficult battle against rivals, while Verstappen continues to demand machinery capable of fighting consistently at the front.
Despite those challenges, Verstappen has continued to show his ability behind the wheel. At the Belgian Grand Prix, for example, he topped the opening practice session at Spa-Francorchamps, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
That performance underlined why Red Bull remains so determined to retain him. Verstappen is not simply another driver on the grid; he is a proven championship winner and one of the biggest assets in the sport.
The story of the 20-minute conversation therefore provides an interesting contrast with the uncertainty surrounding his future today. What began with a remarkably short discussion ultimately developed into a partnership that delivered championship success and numerous memorable victories.
For Red Bull, keeping Verstappen happy and competitive could prove crucial to its future ambitions. For Verstappen, the decision over where to race next will likely depend heavily on the team’s performance and its ability to provide him with a genuine opportunity to fight for more championships.
Whatever happens next, the fact that such a major chapter in Verstappen’s career was reportedly shaped by a conversation lasting just 20 minutes remains one of the more remarkable stories behind his rise to the top of Formula 1.
