Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted the team could soon face an FIA penalty despite leading both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships with rising star Kimi Antonelli. While Mercedes has enjoyed an outstanding season on track, Wolff acknowledged there are underlying concerns that could have major consequences if the team fails to remain within Formula 1’s strict regulations.
Antonelli, just 19 years old, stepped into one of the toughest roles in motorsport when he replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2025 campaign. Taking over the seat vacated by one of the sport’s greatest drivers brought enormous expectations, making his transition into Formula 1 far from straightforward.
The young Italian’s rookie season was marked by both promise and inconsistency. He regularly displayed exceptional pace and natural talent but often found it difficult to match the performances of experienced teammate George Russell, particularly during the European leg of the season. Russell’s greater experience with both the Mercedes package and Formula 1 racing allowed him to hold the upper hand at several events as Antonelli adapted to life at the highest level.
Antonelli had already been in the spotlight before becoming a full-time Mercedes driver. His first official Formula 1 appearance came during practice for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, where he replaced Russell in front of his home crowd. The session ended in disappointment after he crashed the car shortly after leaving the pit lane, but Mercedes remained convinced that the incident was part of the learning process and continued to back his long-term potential.
That confidence has since been rewarded. Antonelli has developed into one of Formula 1’s leading contenders, helping Mercedes establish itself as the benchmark team in both championship battles. Nevertheless, Wolff insists the team’s success on the track does not eliminate the need for caution away from it.
The Mercedes boss stressed that any failure to comply with FIA regulations could bring significant penalties capable of damaging the team’s title hopes. While he remains optimistic about Mercedes’ competitiveness, he emphasized that staying within the rules is every bit as important as delivering race-winning performances.
With the championship entering a crucial phase, Mercedes must balance its pursuit of victories with strict adherence to Formula 1’s technical and sporting regulations. Antonelli’s remarkable rise—from crashing on his first official F1 outing to fighting for the world championship—highlights his impressive development, but both driver and team know that avoiding costly FIA sanctions could prove decisive in the battle for this season’s titles.
