Mercedes Formula 1 star Kimi Antonelli has found himself at the center of an unexpected legal dispute away from the racetrack, with his former manager, Giovanni Minardi, reportedly taking legal action over alleged unpaid compensation connected to the early years of the Italian driver’s career.

 

 

 

 

The legal proceedings, which have reportedly been ongoing behind the scenes for nearly a year, have now reached the Bologna civil court in Italy. The case revolves around claims that Minardi was never adequately compensated for the work, investment, and opportunities he provided during Antonelli’s formative years as one of Italy’s brightest karting talents.

 

 

 

 

The development comes at a time when Antonelli is enjoying the most successful period of his young career. The Mercedes driver has established himself as one of Formula 1’s standout performers in 2026 and is currently leading the drivers’ championship, making the off-track dispute an unwelcome distraction during a crucial title fight.

 

 

 

 

According to reports, Antonelli joined the Minardi Management program in 2014 when he was still a child making his name in karting. Giovanni Minardi, the son of former Formula 1 team owner Giancarlo Minardi, is said to have played a significant role in supporting the young driver’s early development and opening doors within motorsport.

 

 

 

 

Among the opportunities reportedly arranged by Minardi was a test intended to help Antonelli secure a place within Ferrari’s prestigious junior driver academy. However, Ferrari ultimately decided not to sign the youngster at that stage because of his age.

According to Grassani, Minardi believes that years of dedication, financial investment, and personal sacrifice in helping develop Antonelli’s career were never properly recognized.

 

 

 

 

He stated that pursuing the matter through the courts became the only remaining option after attempts to reach an agreement outside the courtroom failed to produce a satisfactory outcome.

 

 

 

 

Grassani further described the case as highly complex, explaining that it has already involved numerous court hearings over the past year.

 

 

 

 

The legal proceedings reportedly involve not only Antonelli himself but also his parents, with allegations relating to the termination of the management agreement that had been signed when Antonelli was still a minor.

 

 

 

 

According to the lawyer, once Antonelli joined the Mercedes program, his family believed that the conditions for continuing the original management arrangement were no longer appropriate. That decision ultimately led to the disagreement over compensation and contractual obligations.

 

 

 

 

Grassani also revealed that discussions aimed at reaching an out-of-court settlement had taken place. However, he said the proposals presented were considered unacceptable by Minardi, despite his willingness to negotiate, resulting in the matter continuing before the civil court.

 

 

 

 

Neither Antonelli nor Mercedes has publicly commented on the legal proceedings at the time of writing.
