FIA Issues Late Disqualification on Lewis Hamilton After Hungarian Grand Prix as Mercedes Faces Growing Reliability Concerns
The FIA has confirmed a late disqualification involving Lewis Hamilton following the Hungarian Grand Prix, adding another dramatic twist to an already eventful Formula 1 weekend. While the governing body has yet to release all of the technical details surrounding the decision, the development has sparked widespread discussion throughout the paddock and has dealt another blow to Mercedes as the team continues its battle for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
Hamilton, who had fought hard throughout the race to secure valuable championship points, now faces the disappointment of seeing his result removed from the official classification. The decision could have significant implications in the title race, particularly with the margins between the leading contenders becoming increasingly tight as the 2026 season heads toward its second half.
The disqualification comes at a challenging time for Mercedes, which has enjoyed a resurgence in performance this season. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff recently admitted that the team is carefully evaluating its power unit strategy for the remainder of the season, acknowledging that engine-related grid penalties may become unavoidable. Formula 1 regulations limit the number of power unit components each driver can use throughout the championship. Exceeding that allocation automatically results in grid penalties at the race where additional components are introduced.
Those components include the internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-H, MGU-K, energy store, control electronics and exhaust system. Once a driver reaches the permitted limit, every new component fitted carries sporting consequences that can significantly affect race weekends.
Rather than waiting for an unexpected mechanical failure, many teams deliberately choose circuits where overtaking is easier before taking fresh engine components. By accepting a planned grid penalty at a favourable venue, they hope to recover positions during the race while benefiting from improved reliability for the remainder of the season.
Mercedes appears to be approaching exactly that dilemma.
Both of the team’s drivers are reportedly nearing the maximum allocation of several power unit components, leaving engineers with increasingly limited options. Every race weekend now requires careful management of mileage, wear and reliability to avoid costly failures that could completely derail championship ambitions.
Fortunately for the Brackley-based outfit, Formula 1 regulations allow previously introduced components to be reused throughout the season. As long as those parts remain functional, teams may rotate them back into the car without triggering further penalties. This provides some flexibility, enabling Mercedes to extend the life of its engine pool while delaying the introduction of fresh components.
Even so, relying on older equipment carries obvious risks.
A power unit failure during a Grand Prix would likely result in retirement from the race, costing far more championship points than a planned grid penalty. Engineers therefore face the difficult task of balancing reliability against competitiveness, especially with every point now carrying enormous significance.
Speaking about the situation before the latest developments, Toto Wolff explained that Mercedes has not yet reached a final decision regarding additional engine components. Instead, the team continues to analyse the condition of each element within its power unit pool while monitoring the competitive landscape.
The final strategy will likely depend on several factors, including the characteristics of upcoming circuits, the performance of rival teams, and the championship standings. Certain tracks offer greater overtaking opportunities, making them more suitable locations for accepting penalties should they become necessary.
The late FIA decision involving Hamilton only adds further pressure on Mercedes as it attempts to recover from a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix. Losing points through disqualification not only affects Hamilton’s individual championship hopes but could also prove costly in the Constructors’ Championship, where every result plays a crucial role.
With several races still remaining before the end of the season, Mercedes knows that maintaining reliability may ultimately prove just as important as producing outright speed. Championship-winning campaigns are often determined by consistency rather than occasional victories, and avoiding unnecessary retirements could become the deciding factor.
For Hamilton, attention will now quickly shift to the next round, where he will hope to bounce back from the disappointment and continue fighting at the front. Mercedes, meanwhile, must carefully navigate both the sporting and technical challenges that lie ahead.
As Formula 1 enters the crucial final phase of the 2026 campaign, strategic decisions regarding engine management, reliability and race execution are expected to become increasingly influential.
