Lewis Hamilton Issues Strong Fred Vasseur Statement as Ferrari Pressure Intensifies
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has publicly backed team principal Fred Vasseur, insisting the Frenchman is the right person to lead the Scuderia despite growing speculation over his future.
Lewis Hamilton has delivered a powerful vote of confidence in Fred Vasseur as pressure continues to build around the Ferrari team principal.
Speculation over Vasseur’s position intensified after Ferrari endured another difficult result in Baku, extending the team’s run without a podium to five Grands Prix. The situation was further fuelled by public comments from former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who appeared to express interest in Ferrari’s situation.
Ferrari subsequently moved to quash the rumours, holding a short-notice media call on Tuesday to reaffirm that Vasseur’s position was secure.
Hamilton has now reinforced that message.
Hamilton backs Vasseur
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Hamilton made it clear that he believes Vasseur remains the right man to lead Ferrari.
> “I think Fred has the full backing [of the team],” Hamilton said, as quoted by The Times.
The seven-time world champion went further, describing Vasseur as a “fantastic leader” and insisting that he can take Ferrari in the right direction.
> “There often seems to be a lot of focus on one individual in one role always here,” Hamilton said.
“Fred is a fantastic leader. He really is the guy to take this team in the right direction.”
Hamilton’s comments come at a crucial moment for Ferrari, with expectations remaining exceptionally high despite the team’s struggles to consistently challenge at the front.
Hamilton admits Ferrari structure needs changes
While Hamilton strongly defended Vasseur, he stopped short of suggesting that Ferrari’s current structure is beyond criticism.
The Ferrari driver acknowledged that there are aspects of the organisation he would change, although he refused to reveal precisely what those changes would be.
“There are changes that I would make, but I’m not going to talk about what those are,” Hamilton said.
He also pointed out that responsibility for Ferrari’s performance cannot simply be placed on the team principal.
“Ultimately it’s not a one-man situation. It’s lots and lots of people coming together.”
Hamilton referenced his former Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, whose responsibilities extend beyond those held by Vasseur, but stressed that the two organisational structures are fundamentally different.
‘Fred is not going anywhere’
Hamilton was particularly emphatic when discussing Ferrari’s decision to publicly defend Vasseur.
The Briton welcomed the intervention and rejected suggestions that internal tensions were threatening to fracture the team.
> “Honestly, outside sources seem to be so negative towards us as a team and be trying to break our spirit but they are not succeeding,” Hamilton said.
He insisted that Ferrari remains united behind Vasseur and that the team is continuing to work towards its long-term objectives.
“Fred is the guy to lead us. He’s doing a fantastic job.”
Hamilton then delivered his clearest message yet on Vasseur’s future.
“Fred is in his position, he’s not going anywhere and I’m here to stay with him and I still believe fully in where we’re going.”
Ferrari pressure continues in Bahrain
Despite Hamilton’s backing, Ferrari’s results remain the ultimate measure of progress.
Hamilton and Vasseur will return to the circuit on Friday for the opening practice sessions of the Bahrain Grand Prix, with Ferrari under pressure to convert its considerable resources and expectations into stronger results.
For now, Hamilton has made his position unmistakable: he remains firmly behind Vasseur and believes Ferrari’s problems cannot be solved simply by changing the person at the top.
The pressure, however, will continue to follow the Scuderia onto the track.
