Michael Schumacher’s wife Corinna can be seen struggling to hold back tears in the trailer for a new Netflix documentary about the Formula 1 legend. The 57-year-old, who married Schumacher in 1995, gives rare intimate insight into their marriage in ‘Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend’, which launches globally on October 2. The film chronicles the turbulent and defining 1994 season when a 25-year-old Schumacher won the first of his seven World Championship titles, as ‘Schumi Mania’ swept Germany. Key figures including former manager Willi Weber, ex-Benetton boss Flavio Briatore and former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone also participate.

In the trailer, Corinna says “Not many people know Michael the way I know him” before becoming emotional while reflecting on the dangers of the sport. The documentary also addresses the tragic weekend of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix where Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger lost their lives, with Corinna recalling: “That was the first time we thought ‘This is actually dangerous. you can’t stop a real racer from driving'”. The moment marks one of her most open public appearances since Schumacher’s devastating skiing accident in December 2013 in the French Alps, which left him with life-altering brain injuries and requiring round-the-clock care at the family home on Lake Geneva.[But]

It echoes the raw emotion she showed in the 2021 Netflix film _Schumacher_, where she said “Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength” and “I miss Michael every day. But it’s not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him”. Corinna has fiercely protected her husband’s privacy since the accident, maintaining her long-held principle of “Private is private” and “Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael”. Whether she will give a new update on his current health in the upcoming documentary remains to be seen, but the trailer already promises never-before-seen home footage and a deeply personal perspective on the man behind the legend.
