FIA Confirms McLaren Fine After Lando Norris Suffers €900 Penalty in Spanish GP Qualifying
McLaren has been handed a €900 fine by the FIA stewards following a pit-lane speeding incident involving Lando Norris during qualifying for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
Norris produced an impressive performance at the newly introduced Madring circuit, securing pole position for McLaren after narrowly beating Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
The reigning Formula 1 world champion posted a fastest lap of 1:31.824, finishing just 0.011 seconds ahead of Antonelli to claim his third pole position of the 2026 season.
However, despite his strong qualifying result, Norris’ session was followed by an FIA investigation after he was found to have exceeded the permitted speed limit in the pit lane.
The stewards subsequently confirmed that the breach resulted in a financial penalty for McLaren, with the team ordered to pay €900.
The punishment was imposed on the team rather than Norris personally, in accordance with the FIA regulations governing pit-lane speed-limit violations. Such infringements can result in fines when a car is recorded travelling above the prescribed limit.

Antonelli, meanwhile, will start alongside Norris from the front row after missing out on pole by the narrowest of margins. The Mercedes youngster’s qualifying performance further underlines the growing intensity of the championship battle.
