Lando Norris has sparked a fresh debate over Formula 1 driver salaries after making it clear that he believes his value should place him in the same financial category as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. 🏁💰

The McLaren star has reportedly agreed to a lucrative new contract that will keep him with the team through 2030. While the deal is believed to make Norris one of the highest-paid drivers on the current grid, he has suggested that his earnings are still some distance away from those of Hamilton and Verstappen.

Norris was reportedly open about his feelings regarding his current contract, saying: “I feel I should earn as much as them, but the contract is certainly not close to the level of Lewis or Max.”

That statement has naturally raised an important question among Formula 1 fans: does Norris already deserve to be paid at the same level as two of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport?

According to reported figures, Norris could earn around €60 million per season under his new McLaren agreement. That would place him among the biggest earners in Formula 1. However, Verstappen is reportedly ahead of him at approximately €92 million per year, while Hamilton also commands a significant salary package.

Norris certainly has a strong argument when it comes to his recent performances. The 26-year-old has developed into one of the leading drivers on the grid and has established himself as a genuine championship contender. His first world title has also strengthened his case for being considered among Formula 1’s elite.

However, when comparing his overall career achievements with Hamilton and Verstappen, there remains a substantial difference.

Hamilton’s record speaks for itself. The seven-time world champion has accumulated 106 Grand Prix victories during a career spanning more than a decade and a half. His success includes multiple championship battles, numerous records and an extraordinary level of consistency at the highest level.

Verstappen, meanwhile, has also built an exceptional résumé. With four world championships and 71 race victories, the Red Bull driver has dominated large portions of the modern Formula 1 era. His performances have firmly established him as one of the sport’s defining talents.

Norris, by comparison, has one world championship and 26 Grand Prix victories. Those numbers are impressive, particularly considering how competitive the modern Formula 1 field has become, but they still leave him some way behind Hamilton and Verstappen in terms of career accomplishments.

That does not necessarily mean Norris is wrong to believe he deserves more money. Driver salaries are not determined purely by trophies and statistics. Teams also consider a driver’s age, potential, marketability, performance, consistency and importance to the team’s long-term project.

McLaren clearly sees Norris as a central part of its future. Keeping him under contract until 2030 demonstrates the confidence the team has in his ability to deliver further championships and victories.

The real debate, therefore, is whether Norris should already receive exactly the same financial recognition as Hamilton and Verstappen—or whether he should first build a larger collection of championships and race wins.

There is no doubt that Norris has the talent and momentum to challenge the sport’s biggest names. But matching their salaries could ultimately require him to match more of their achievements on the track.

For now, Norris remains one of Formula 1’s biggest stars, but whether he has done enough to justify Hamilton and Verstappen-level money remains a question fans will continue to argue about.
