The biggest Formula 1 stories from Sunday, August 30, included growing attention around Ferrari’s internal situation, uncertainty surrounding Esteban Ocon’s future at Haas, and a remarkable financial milestone for Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has called for a resolution between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc as tensions appear to be building inside Ferrari. The seven-time world champion has made no secret of his frustration following the Dutch Grand Prix, where he believes a strategic decision prevented him from challenging for a podium finish.

Hamilton was unhappy that Ferrari chose not to release him to take advantage of his fresher tyres during the race at Zandvoort. The British driver repeatedly indicated after the event that the decision had cost him a potentially strong result.

Despite Hamilton’s frustration, Ferrari and both drivers have publicly attempted to play down suggestions of a serious disagreement. However, Schumacher believes the situation could become problematic if it is not addressed. With Hamilton and Leclerc competing as teammates at one of F1’s most high-profile teams, managing their relationship will be crucial as Ferrari continues its push for greater success.

Meanwhile, Haas have completed an important three-day test at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, featuring three rookie drivers. The programme is understood to be part of the team’s evaluation process as it considers its driver line-up for the 2027 Formula 1 season.

Esteban Ocon’s position at Haas has increasingly come under scrutiny, with questions surrounding whether the Frenchman will remain with the team next season. While no replacement has been officially confirmed, the participation of three young drivers in the Portimao test has intensified speculation that Haas could be preparing for a change.

The test is therefore expected to provide valuable information about which candidates could potentially earn a future F1 opportunity. Performance, consistency and feedback gathered during the programme could all influence Haas’ eventual decision.

Elsewhere, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reached an extraordinary financial milestone through his ownership stake in the German manufacturer. His investment in Mercedes has reportedly grown to an estimated value of around $2 billion, highlighting the enormous financial rewards that can come from combining team leadership with strategic ownership.

Interestingly, Wolff’s path to this fortune was influenced by the late Niki Lauda, who played an important role in encouraging him to become involved with Mercedes. Wolff has previously suggested that without Lauda’s influence, his investment could have been even larger.

The developments underline how much is happening away from the racetrack as F1 teams prepare for another major chapter in the sport.
