FIA announce Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen penalty verdicts following D…see details
The FIA has announced that Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and three other Formula 1 drivers will not receive penalties despite being found to have breached a section of the International Sporting Code during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
The incident occurred ahead of Saturday afternoonβs Sprint race at the Zandvoort circuit. Hamilton and Verstappen both took part in the Sprint, eventually finishing seventh and sixth respectively. However, before the race got underway, the FIA identified five drivers who had failed to comply with instructions contained in the Race Directorβs Event Note.
The drivers involved were seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, reigning world champion Max Verstappen, Yuki Tsunoda, Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas. According to the FIA, all five were found to have breached Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code. The particular regulation relates to βnon-compliance with Race Directorβs Event Note,β meaning the drivers did not fully follow a specific instruction issued by the race director.
Despite confirming that the regulations had been breached, the FIA decided that no sporting penalties would be imposed on any of the five drivers. This means that Hamilton and Verstappen were able to keep their Sprint race results without receiving grid penalties, time penalties, points deductions or other punishments connected to the incident.
The decision comes during an important part of the Formula 1 season, with every point becoming increasingly valuable as the championship battle develops. Hamilton, who has been competing for Ferrari, and Verstappen, representing Red Bull, remain two of the biggest names on the Formula 1 grid, meaning any penalty involving either driver can attract significant attention from fans and teams.
The Sprint at Zandvoort provided another opportunity for drivers to score valuable championship points before the main Dutch Grand Prix. Hamilton crossed the finish line in seventh place, while Verstappen finished one position ahead in sixth. Although neither driver managed to challenge for the top positions, both were able to complete the race without additional punishment from the FIA following the investigation.
Tsunoda, Stroll and Bottas were also included in the FIAβs announcement after being identified as having committed the same regulatory breach. However, just like Hamilton and Verstappen, they escaped punishment.
The FIAβs decision demonstrates that while the governing body can formally recognize a breach of the sporting regulations, it can also choose not to impose a penalty depending on the circumstances surrounding the incident. In this case, the five drivers were cleared of any further sporting consequences despite the FIA confirming that they had failed to comply with the relevant event instructions.
As a result, Hamilton, Verstappen, Tsunoda, Stroll and Bottas can continue the Dutch Grand Prix weekend without carrying any additional penalties from the Sprint event. The ruling brings an end to the matter for the five drivers, allowing attention to return to the on-track competition and the ongoing championship battle.
