F1 News Today: Lance Stroll tipped for Aston Martin exit as team boss axed

 

Lance Stroll’s future with Aston Martin has once again become a talking point within the Formula 1 community, with suggestions that the Canadian driver could eventually decide to move away from the team. The speculation comes at a time when Aston Martin is attempting to recover from a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season and rebuild its competitiveness.

 

Stroll has spent several seasons with the Silverstone-based outfit and has remained alongside two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. His position has frequently attracted attention because of his connection to team owner Lawrence Stroll, his father. However, recent discussion surrounding his future is reportedly not simply about whether Aston Martin believes he is performing well enough. Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has suggested that Stroll could potentially make the decision himself to pursue a different direction in his racing career.

 

The possibility of Stroll leaving would represent a significant development because his long association with the Aston Martin project has made him one of the most recognisable members of the team. Aston Martin previously confirmed that Stroll would remain with the team into the new generation of Formula 1 regulations, ending earlier speculation about his immediate future.

 

The team’s performance has nevertheless created additional pressure. Aston Martin endured a particularly difficult opening part of the 2026 campaign, scoring only one point through the first 11 rounds before introducing a major upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The extensive changes produced encouraging signs, although Stroll and Alonso finished outside the points in Hungary.

 

Away from Aston Martin, another major leadership development has also emerged in Formula 1. Cadillac, competing in its first F1 season, has removed founding team principal Graeme Lowdon from his position. Marcin Budkowski has immediately taken over as team principal for the remainder of the season. The leadership change had reportedly been planned as part of a broader transition intended to strengthen Cadillac’s long-term competitiveness.

 

Lowdon played an important role in helping Cadillac establish itself in Formula 1 and guided the project from its development stage into its debut season. However, after 11 rounds, Cadillac remained the only team without a championship point, increasing the pressure for changes within its management structure. Budkowski arrives with considerable Formula 1 experience, having previously worked with organisations including Ferrari, McLaren, the FIA and Renault/Alpine.

 

For Stroll, the immediate future remains an intriguing storyline. There is no confirmed announcement that he is leaving Aston Martin, meaning the current reports should be viewed as speculation rather than a completed driver change. Nevertheless, renewed discussion about his future could become increasingly important as teams and drivers begin considering their long-term plans.

 

With the 2026 season entering another important phase after the summer break, both Aston Martin’s performance and Stroll’s position will remain under scrutiny. The next races could provide a clearer indication of whether the Canadian remains committed to the team’s ambitious project or whether a surprising change could eventually emerge.
