Red Bull Racing has found itself at the centre of renewed Formula 1 speculation during the summer break, with Max Verstappen’s long-term future once again becoming one of the biggest talking points across the paddock.
Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull, but uncertainty surrounding his future has continued to attract attention following the team’s difficult start to the 2026 campaign. The introduction of the new-generation regulations has changed the competitive order, and Red Bull has struggled to consistently match the pace of Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren.
That situation has inevitably raised questions about whether Verstappen will remain committed to the team if Red Bull cannot provide him with a car capable of regularly fighting for victories and championships.
The Dutchman has nevertheless continued to demonstrate his ability to extract strong results from the RB22. Even when Red Bull has lacked outright pace, Verstappen has remained one of the most consistent drivers on the grid.
His performances have also ensured that speculation surrounding a potential move to Mercedes refuses to disappear.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has previously made it clear that Verstappen is a driver the team would be interested in, although there is currently no confirmed agreement between the Dutchman and the Silver Arrows. Mercedes already has George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in its line-up, meaning any attempt to bring Verstappen to Brackley would require major decisions regarding its driver structure.
For Red Bull, retaining Verstappen is therefore becoming increasingly important. The team knows that losing its leading driver would represent a major blow at a time when it is already working to understand and improve its 2026 package.
Verstappen has also highlighted Red Bull’s race-weekend performance as an area requiring significant improvement. The team can sometimes show impressive pace early in a weekend before losing ground when conditions and competition intensify.
That weakness will be one of Red Bull’s major targets during the remainder of the season.
With Formula 1 currently on its summer break, Red Bull has an opportunity to reassess its car, development programme and long-term plans. The next few races could prove particularly important in determining whether the team can convince Verstappen that his future remains best served in Milton Keynes.
For now, there is no confirmed Verstappen departure and no confirmed Mercedes deal. But with the driver market already beginning to take shape, every development involving the four-time world champion will be closely monitored.
Red Bull’s biggest challenge may not simply be keeping Verstappen happy — it may be proving that it can once again give him a championship-winning car.
