Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari on Red Alert as McLaren Plot More F1 Upgrades

McLaren’s dominant return before the summer break could be only the beginning, with the championship leaders already planning further performance gains for the second half of the 2026 season.

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari have been handed a fresh warning after McLaren revealed that further upgrades could be coming for the MCL40 later in the 2026 Formula 1 season.

McLaren returned to the front in emphatic fashion at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris delivering a commanding performance at the Hungaroring. However, rather than simply protecting their advantage during the second half of the campaign, the team are already assessing further opportunities to extract performance from their car.

McLaren technical director Neil Houldey has confirmed that the team could introduce another substantial development package at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with additional upgrades potentially arriving at later races.

That prospect will concern Ferrari and Mercedes, particularly after both teams struggled to match McLaren’s pace in Hungary.

McLaren refuse to stand still

McLaren’s development programme has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 season, with the team continuously refining the MCL40 since its launch.

Houldey explained that the team has gained a much clearer understanding of where performance can be found as the season has progressed.

“From an aerodynamic perspective, you’ve got front wing, rear wing, floor and bodywork, and you know you’re going to be looking for upgrades in all of those areas,” Houldey explained.

Rather than committing exclusively to major bodywork revisions, McLaren has increasingly focused on smaller aerodynamic components that can deliver performance without requiring fundamental changes to the car.

The floorboard and the area of the floor ahead of the rear wheels have proved particularly useful development areas.

McLaren have also learned more about tyre behaviour, including the requirements for heating and cooling, allowing the team to tailor subsequent upgrades more effectively.

More upgrades could arrive after Baku

The biggest concern for Ferrari and Mercedes is that McLaren’s development programme may not end with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Houldey admitted that the team will continue assessing the competitive picture after the summer break before deciding how aggressively to develop the MCL40.

“If we find something substantial in aero after the summer break, and whether we think there’s value in doing an end-of-season package, or fully switch to next year’s car,” he said.

The McLaren technical director added that there is a “good chance” the team could introduce upgrades beyond Baku.

Those developments are expected to focus largely on components that can be added or modified without compromising the team’s preparations for its 2027 challenger.

That could give McLaren a significant advantage if the team manages to continue extracting performance from the current-generation car while simultaneously preparing for the next major technical era.

Ferrari and Hamilton face another challenge

For Hamilton and Ferrari, the timing could hardly be more significant.

Ferrari have been chasing consistency throughout the season, while Hamilton’s hopes of mounting a serious title challenge depend heavily on the team finding additional performance.

McLaren’s latest warning suggests Ferrari cannot afford to rely on the current competitive order remaining unchanged.

If McLaren can continue producing upgrades that deliver measurable gains, Ferrari and Mercedes could find themselves fighting an increasingly difficult battle for victories and championship points.

The situation also places greater pressure on Ferrari’s development programme. With the championship fight entering its decisive phase, every aerodynamic gain could prove crucial.

The title battle is far from settled

McLaren’s dominance in Hungary may have sent a message to their rivals, but the bigger statement could come later in the season.

The team’s willingness to continue developing the MCL40 while keeping one eye firmly on the 2027 regulations shows that McLaren believe there is still significant performance available.

For Ferrari and Hamilton, that means the second half of the season could become even more demanding.

McLaren have already demonstrated that they can return from a difficult spell and immediately re-establish themselves at the front. If the promised upgrades deliver as expected, the title contenders may have an even bigger problem on their hands when the championship resumes.
