Mbappé Explains Why He Turned Down Real Madrid in 2017

Kylian Mbappé has finally revealed the real reason he rejected Real Madrid back in 2017 — even though signing for Los Blancos had been his dream since childhood.

At just 18, Mbappé had exploded onto the scene with AS Monaco and was one of the most sought-after players in world football. Real Madrid were ready to match the €180 million fee, but the Frenchman chose PSG instead.

Speaking to Movistar+, Mbappé explained his decision clearly:

“When I left Monaco, at 18, I was very clear that I wanted to play… and Real Madrid had Benzema, Cristiano and Bale. I didn’t want to be on the bench.”

He acknowledged that top clubs were promising him game time, but he knew the reality at Madrid:

“All the clubs in Europe told me I was going to play, but I also knew Madrid, with all the respect they had for me, couldn’t guarantee me minutes in every game.”

Why PSG Made Sense

For Mbappé, staying in Paris offered something unique: immediate game time and the chance to shine in his hometown.

“Of course, I dreamed of playing for Real Madrid, but being a starter is a privilege. The opportunity to be at home, in Paris, came up, and it was a great one for me. Seven incredible years. The pride of playing in the city where you were born is something very special.”

Still, the Real Madrid dream never died.

“I always held on to that dream… and I fulfilled it last year. I am very happy.”

Mbappé finally joined Madrid in 2024 on a free transfer — and he’s delivered immediately: 58 goals in 69 appearances.

He Also Said No to Madrid at 13

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time Mbappé turned down Los Blancos. He also rejected them after a successful trial when he was just 13.

When asked why, he said:

“A bit of everything. But not because of my family — I’ve always made my own decisions. They understood. Having a family of athletes helps — they know a career is personal.”
