Breaking news: Antoine Semenyo has broken his silence on his move to Chelsea

Chelsea is resisting the urge to make panic buys this January, even as pressure intensifies on manager Enzo Maresca and the club’s ownership group.

After their eye-watering £266.5 million summer spending spree that brought in talent like Joao Pedro, Estevao, Jorrel Hato, and Jamie Gittens, the Blues are committed to a measured approach this winter rather than rushing into desperate signings.

The club had expressed interest in Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, valued at £65 million, but ultimately stepped back from the pursuit. He now looks likely to join Manchester City instead. Still, this interest signals that Behdad Eghbali and the Stamford Bridge leadership remain focused on strengthening their attack—just not necessarily right now.

January is expected to be busier on the departure side, with several players potentially on their way out. According to SunSport, even Maresca himself could be among those leaving. Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, and Tyrique George are all candidates for transfers, while promising young striker Shim Mheuka may head out on loan, as SunSport reported this morning.

Chelsea’s brief interest in Semenyo—who played a key role in both of Bournemouth’s goals during Tuesday’s match against the Blues—offers insight into what the club values in potential signings.

What made Semenyo attractive was his proven track record of scoring goals in the Premier League. While talented prospects like Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho show immense potential, neither has demonstrated the consistent goal-scoring form needed at this level. Next summer’s expected arrival of Geovany Quenda from Sporting could provide a longer-term solution, though he remains untested in English football.
